THE firain STORY
Hello, I'm Jo McCarthy, the owner of firain.
I come from a long line of globetrotters and nomads. They have nourished my creativity and handed down to me a contradiction that many of us seem to share: an equal love for wild-spirited adventures and the deep sense of comfort found by creating a 'home', wherever that may be.
I've learned from my years of upping sticks and living in five different countries that home shouldn't be bursting with stuff - it should be layered with well-loved pieces that you'd happily pack in a case, on to the next place, if that's where life takes you.
In the autumn of 2017, my husband Ben and I were packing our own cases from adventures overseas and relocating to the beautiful North Wales coast. The time was right for me to flex my creative muscles and establish my own small business in the form of an online shop. Through my shop, I can share this ethos of celebrating exploration and adventure whilst being rooted by the joys and solace of home.
When choosing a name for the shop, The ancient welsh word 'firain' came to us. Meaning 'good, noble, fair and fine', for us it evokes the feelings of provenance, integrity and authenticity. I look for handmade pieces that are not only uplifting to use, but are made in an ethical way by passionate creatives - many of whom run very small businesses themselves. Read more about them in the Meet The Makers section. I can help you find the most beautiful handmade gifts for yourself and others.
It means so much to me that you are part of the firain story. Thank you for being here.
